When I was a kid, I loved walking to school. Maybe it was the relief of not having to take the school bus – jostling for the perfect seat, the bumpy ride, the windows that wouldn’t open. Maybe it was the feeling of freedom of being outside.

Here I am test driving an adult big wheel!

Although it’s easy to hop in the car with my kids to get them to school, we try to bike or walk. This morning, in honor of Fuel Free Friday, we rode our bikes. My kids love biking to school and are energized and in a great mood by the time we arrive.

The benefits of an active start to the day are not just mood. A 2012 study by Danish scientists found that kids who walked to school were better able to concentrate not just in the morning, but for four hours into the school day.

Unfortunately the number of kids who bike or walk to school has continually declined over the years. In 1969, 48% of kids ages 5 to 14 usually walked or biked to school. In 2009, only 13% of kids started their school day this way. This drop in walking and biking for kids follows declines in recess time and playtime, too.

To help students who may be getting antsy from all this sitting – in cars, at desks – some schools have started using adjustable height desks for their students. If working at an adjustable height desk can help adults with concentration, productivity, and focus, why not kids!

My kids use the Rebel Crank-Up 1000 that we have in our house to do projects, play Legos, and work on the computer. They just turn the crank and get it to the right height for them. As adults, we can set the example for kids of the importance of being active throughout the day whether it’s walking to work, using our adjustable height desk, or playing soccer in the backyard after school.

Let’s move!
