Treadmill Desks Help Fight Inactivity

As we talked about in our last post about the history of the treadmill desk (it’s really more interesting than it sounds!), it was a bit revolutionary for researchers to start studying the effects of physical activity on health. More recently, researchers have looked at the effects of inactivity on health. There are a plethora of studies in this area now, some of which we discuss here.

A few studies send some humbling messages, including one that concludes it takes merely two weeks of reduced activity for your body to start paying the price.

Two Weeks to Worse Metabolism

The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2008. The researchers wanted to see what would happen when healthy, active men decreased their daily activity. These were simple reductions in activity, such as taking the elevator instead of the stairs, parking in the closest parking space rather than the farthest, and driving the car to do errands rather than walking.

The study followed 18 healthy, relativity young, and active men. None of the participants had a family history of diabetes. The men reduced the number of steps that they took throughout the day by about 1,300.

After just two weeks, the amount of insulin in their blood rose by about 60%. Triglyceride levels also increased. Basically their bodies started to become worse at processing fats and sugars.

Some men also experienced an average increase in abdominal fat of 7%, even though this did not increase their overall weight. This increased fat around the middle is a serious health risk, as it can be an early warning sign for diabetes.

Again, all of this happened after just two weeks!

Treadmill Desks to the Rescue

Luckily, you can swing the pendulum the other way in just a few weeks, too. Adding steps to your day can jump start your metabolism and help your body become a lean, mean, glucose-processing machine.

So if you’re thinking about getting a treadmill desk and thinking that you’ve still got time to make the move, well, now is the moment. Start experiencing the benefits of walking at a treadmill desk! Your body will thank you!
